Business Spotlight: Girardi’s Osteria

Small businesses and the people who own and work in them are the heart of our Edmonds community. To keep our downtown thriving, it’s more critical than ever that we think local first.

In this new series, we will be highlighting independently-owned businesses, and learn more about the folks that make them run!

Meet Fred Milani from Girardi’s Osteria

What is your favorite part of your business?
The people. Employees and Guests. We have a cohesive group of servers, hosts and kitchen who care for the business as if they owned it. The result is great service, atmosphere with Italian music playing in the background, great food in generous proportions, and affordable, in the face of rising costs.

Why did you start your business?
We were getting ready to retire from an entirely unrelated industry and though retiring in food and restaurant business is going to keep us busy. Certainly did!

Why did you choose Edmonds for your business?
Quaint little town with lots of shops, friendly people, reasonable safety. Besides, Girardi’s was in Edmonds!

What is unique about your business?
Girardi’s has been famous for providing no nonsense Italian (with some fusion) dishes, in good proportions and highly competitive prices. We would rather have a full restaurant with a lower margin on each table, than a few tables with high profit margin. And we like to serve the people of Edmonds when they are hungry, not when it makes sense financially for us. As a result, we are open 7 days a week even though some of those days we operate at a loss. But we offer food and service to those who cannot or won’t cook in their homes and apartments, or just want to get a bite to go to the beach. We cater to the people, not our bottom line.

Why should people do business with you?
I am a computer Geek and a Systems Engineer by education and owned a network management company after I left Microsoft in 2012. Retiring from IT into a restaurant that I love just a year before COVID hit? Priceless!!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I am a computer Geek and an engineer by education and owned a network management company after I left Microsoft in 2012. Retiring from IT into a restaurant that I love at a time COVID hit? Priceless!!

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your business?
All we try to do is to get you out of your kitchen and into our dining room and make life easier for you. Let us do the cooking, serving and cleaning while you dine, enjoy a glass of wine, and have fun with your friends. Often times it is less costly to dine out at Girardi’s than it is to make everything yourself at home, and the shopping and the chopping and the preparing and the cleaning and the washing and putting things away…

We offer an extensive array of Happy Hour items at very attractive prices, and on top of that we present you with a daily/weekly special sheet that showcases dishes we are excited for you to try first, dishes that we had discontinued but brought back due to popular demand, very attractive prices on some of our more premium wine bottles, etc.

AND if we can top that, we offer around 25 different bottles of wine at half price every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. For a little more than the regular price of one glass of wine, you get the whole bottle on those “slow” days. Remember, we’d rather have a full restaurant with a smaller margin. So come on in and enjoy what Girardi’s has been offering for the past 26 years. Service, Value, Great Food.
